I agree.

I believe that to most Emacs users the feature will be extremely
confusing.  Loading fonts to do arithmetic operations clearly makes no
sense.

`eval-last-sep' has a much broader user base than Edebug.  That is why
the feature does not have the same potential to confuse people in
Edebug than in `eval-last-sep'.  Moreover, I have often found the
feature useful in Edebug, but do not remember getting any
non-negligible benefit from it outside Edebug.  Debugging is a very
specialized activity.

For `eval-last-sep' I believe that the right thing to do is to make
the `5 = ?\C-e' feature a user option, off by default.  (But keep it
in Edebug, that is a different situation altogether.)
