Maybe it is just me, but I operate more often on numbers-as-characters
than on numbers-as-numbers.  C-x C-e is very nifty to check, to give
just one example, whether a particular `decode-char' expression does
indeed return the character that I want.  I find this feature very
helpful and a real time-saver.  Given that integers in Emacs are both
characters and numbers, I find this feature consequent, not weird at
all.
