When Emacs is your ultimate program you use for everything then
it's quite natural to make it full-screen!
Anyhow, the problem Joe reported was in his .emacs:
(custom-set-faces
'(default ((t (:weight normal :slant normal :height 240
:width normal :family "fixed")))))
(set-frame-font "6x12")
and font size never changes.
