It doesn't work for me with a tex file a.tex containing just the line

\xyz

Using next-error in buffer *tex-shell* yields 

compilation-next-error: No more errors yet

However, I don't want to urge you improve that workaround.  In the
meantime I use an Emacs version from before the grep.el and compile.el
changes.
