I think changing the calculation would be rather annoying (or at least, not a
trivial change).

Maybe the stealing would be less objectionable if done from the right-most
pixel of the last column of the left half of the split -- it's much more
likely that there's just whitespace there, and even when there is text, I
think latin characters tend to be slightly `left heavy'.
