Could it be that this is the same bug as described in
<URL:http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.pretest.bugs/984> and
<URL:http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.pretest.bugs/1659>?

In the thread the first link is pointing to you will find a
walkthrough of the infinite loop in xdisp.c and the thread the second
link is pointing to encloses a patch by Gerd Moellmann which at least
makes the infinite loop go away.  But I am not sure if it is the same
bug.
