Re: inconsistent behavior of M-x info

I just rebuilt emacs. After running cvs update and

  $ ./configure
  $ make
  $ cd lisp
  $ make recompile EMACS=../src/emacs
  $ cd ..
  $ make

restarting, and updating my emacs21 alias to point to the emacs with
the highest version number in the src directory,

M-x emacs-version 

prints

GNU Emacs 21.3.50.4 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.2.0, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) 
of 2004-04-07 on hope-of-a-stone.local)

Perhaps I'm not running the right thing, because

C-u C-h a grep RET

doesn't turn up grep-mode.

Looking in grep.el, I do see

(define-compilation-mode grep-mode "Grep"

But this does not seem to correspond to any user level command for
switching into grep mode.
