I think it's because in Gnus, the *Summary* buffer is usually selected,
so you can just look at the cursor, which is usually pretty obvious.
Using compile, the error-message buffer is usually _not_ selected, so
the cursor is either almost or entirely invisible.  Recently `gdb arrow'
was supposed to provide a more obvious visual indicator, but in my
opinion it's still not enough (see my other post in this thread for more
on this).

Another reason, I think, is that in Gnus, the *Summary* buffer is
generally less busy (more whitespace), and the information it presents
is duplicated in the *Article* buffer, so you often don't need to look
at it all.  The information in the compilation error-message buffer,
OTOH, is quite crucial.
