Yes, but Emacs should DTRT by default. (That seems to support what I
thought about developers' opinions on the topic.)

No, the fact that foo.o is highlighted in patterns like `-o foo.o'
according to that variable.

Yes.

It seems to be intentional, and it may even be necessary for the away
next-error works now -- I don't know.
