You _can_ do that, but building in separate build-directory is much
cleaner, so a large number of people use that feature.

In a sense, it's the _traditional_ build process that's a big hack -- it
requires a lot of annoying work to distinguish souce and generated
files, e.g., for cleaning and for source-control.  But it's traditional,
so of course it's supported.
