eval-last-sexp and character representations

Running eval-last-sexp on the following
(1+ 36375)
gives me the error
prin1-char: Invalid character: 0107030, 36376, 0x8e18

I have vague memories of this having been mentioned before, but let
me say that I really don't see the use of Emacs telling me that
`(1+ 40000)' (for example) has some bizarre character representation.
