That's the difference. The mail buffer does not have an associated file, so Emacs tries to create a temporary one.I didn't see David's message, but I believe the message is displayed when Emacs tries to create or stat an auto-save file for the *mail* buffer,
convert-standard-filename is still defined in files.el for the Cygwin environment and thus does nothing but merely returning the argument.Type "C-h f convert-standard-filename RET" and Emacs will pop up a buffer telling, among other things, on which Lisp file that function is defined. Click on the file's name and Emacs will display the function's definition from that Lisp file.
