making changes to a face has to be done in one go

Symptoms:

I was trying to set the modeline to black from with m-x customize-face RET 
modeline

With this result in mind, starting from the default.

 '(modeline ((t (:background "black" :inverse-video nil))) t)

So first I set the background to black, set for this session, and then
unset the inverse-video and set for this session. liked the result and
saved for future and only the inverse-video was (un)set.

So I removed the line from my .emacs and restarted emacs and this time I
set both settings, set for this session and after liking the result set
for future. This time again only the inverse-video was (un)set.

To get both settings saved I had to start from the default again, set
both and then use save for future.

Rather unintuitive.
