When running Emacs locally, it does not happen. I'm not 100% sure,
but I believe it's a Gtk-only thing: I tried the Athena build once and
there were no such problems.
Regarding the Gtk version, does the following help?
ketchup% dpkg -S /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
libgtk2.0-0: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
