    I had considered this, but didn't want to invest so much time.  It's also 
more
    complicated in the xml case, because xml-mode is only the default for those,
    unless a more specialized mode comes from the finame.

Unless we actually need this extra complexity, I would rather leave it
out.  Let's not add features to Emacs merely for the sake of added
generality.  That would be a recipe for adding too many new features.
