As for the tool bar, I have to admit I don't use it, even though I haven't
removed it (impresses at least a few of my coworkers who think that emacs is
an ancient tool). But I just can't remember the meaning of all those little
icons (same with windowmanagers, I'm using fvwm and I don't have icons on my
desktop). I do more than 90% of my work via the keyboard and hardly use menus.
About the only exception is carpal-mode, that is similar to a tool bar but
IMHO much better. I used it long before emacs had a tool bar and (what is
especially appealing to me) in contrast to icons one can see immediately the
meaning of a button (no slow, flickering tool tips necessary).
Besides I can position the window where I like, and for me that's next to the
mini-buffer.
