1. c:\Program Files\emacs\bin> emacs -Q
   (emacs starts)
2. type a line of 'm' characters into the scratch buffer
3. move the cursor back halfway... that generates the attached
   screenshot. As you can see, the front section of the 'm' has been
   blanked out.
