      What you really want to test is whether the
    position is in a string or comment (regardless of whether the mode
    uses comments or string syntax).  That's why I suggested a patch using
    `syntax-ppss' before.

I didn't want to try to figure out how to go that far.
If someone else wants to, please go ahead.
