I'm not brushing it aside -- I just wanted to understand the point.

Yes, but you could ensure the buffer is syntactified before calling it
and I haven't found it much of a problem when I call imenu.

I think, in general, if modes are missing syntactic fontification that
they need, it's a bug which should be fixed.
