I can confirm that the workaround works, thanks.  It bring back the
old file selection dialog that I'm used to, which I even prefer.  Btw,
shouldn't that variable be customizable?

I think I fixed this now, but as I did not get a crash with your test case, I can not really confirm it is fixed. If you have time, can you retry a newer Emacs from CVS with the new file dialog, and see if it crashes? That would help a lot.
