Undo after cut of a big region says: No further undo information

Symptoms:

1. start emacs -q --no-site-file
2. load a file with a few thousand lines
3. Mark a region with e.g. 3000 lines (this may depend on average line length)
4. M-x kill-region
5. M-x undo
=> emacs refuses to undo and says:
undo-more: No further undo information
