compilation broken

For some time now, M-x compile fails to recognize many error messages.  
Strangely, when doing M-x compilation-mode within the buffer, everything 
works again as it used to.  Alas I will probably not have time to 
analyse this until the weekend, even though it's a major hassle.  So if 
the culprit finds time...

All I have seen so far is that the font-lock-keywords differ between M-x 
compile and M-x compilation-mode.  Also, when customizing 
compilation-error-regexp-alist, it displays (mapcar 'car 
compilation-error-regexp-alist-alist) as the value, instead of offering 
a checkbox for every element. :-(
