But GNU isn't the whole system either. A typical distibution
contains the work of a lot of other projects and companies as
well. Just to name a few: BSD, X11, SUN, IBM.
Much of that IS part of GNU. We included things like the BSD
network utilities and X back in the 80s.
Our project was the development of a complete free operating system,
not just the development of certain programs. We wrote those programs
as part of producing the complete system.
I think you should
call it GNU/X11/BSD/SUN/IBM/Linux. I admit that GNU forms a big
part of the distribution so I guess that GNU&Friends/Linux is also
fine, if you are in a hurry.
Either of them is ok if you prefer them.
PS: Sorry to all the other projects I forgot mentioning just now.
I had to stop somewhere. But please inform me if you insist on
being on that list.
If you have to omit some of them, the last one you should omit
is GNU. We started the whole thing, and developed a bigger part
than anyone else.
Have you read http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html?
It discusses this question and other related ones.
