Honestly, I don't have a clue to what's involved here, so I simply kept the default. Perhaps I don't have the necessary fonts to support UTF-8? How do I check that?
Sort of calling XCreateFonSet and printing out the missing charsets, I do not know. Missing charsets can happen, its the "can't create fontset" that is strange.
