Yes, in principle (like compressed files), but please don't mess with
that now. I doubt using the extensions causes many false positives,
and I had trouble trying to do differently with PGP files.

The mechanism for doing coding conversion on the basis of file
contents is `auto-coding-regexp-alist' as far as I know.
