That would be exact: having two fields and check boxes to decide and 
enter values, background and foreground, and two sample fields which 
both would change simultaneously background and foreground.

I think I mostly changed the colour values of faces inside .emacs, 
AUCTeX and preview-latex I customized last year in their 
*Customization* buffers -- but did not change any backgrounds.
