syntax class for $ in sh-mode

Is there any reason that $ does not have a `.' (punctuation) syntax
class in sh-mode?
Currently in a buffer you have:
BLAHBLAH=test
$BLAH
If the point is after $BLAH and one invokes dabbrev-expand nothing
happens...
If the syntax for $ were to be changed dabbrev would work.
Any objection to making this change?
