dired starts with / instead of $HOME in Carbon Emacs

Hello!
When trying to dired out of the *Messages* or *Help* buffers the path
starts with / and not $HOME or ~/.
Calendar, diary, holidays, scratch, shell, mail are OK.
In GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0)
of 2005-05-09 on Latsche.local
Distributor `Apple Computers', version 10.3.9
