It's still not subtle enough though -- reading any of the recent
threads about makefile-mode should make it clear that people _hate_
the way it looks.

There are many other badly named faces too.  You should not follow
their example (eventually we will rename them).  [If you wish, you can
rename the old `makefile-space-face' as part of your work -- just add
a (put OLD 'face-alias NEW) underneath the defface to add a
compatibility alias.]
