improper rendering and "garbage" on macos 10.4

An issue I've run into when upgrading to Tiger is that setting the  
frame font to e.g.
    -apple-andale mono-medium-r-normal--13-130-75-75-m-0-mac-roman
results in what looks like miscalculation of rendered string lengths,  
since moving the cursor over text, or scrolling, changes text width,  
leaving garbage all over the frame.Any ideas?  Under Panther this  
wasn't problematic, and -apple-andale mono-medium-r- 
normal--12-0-75-75-m-0-mac-roman works without issues.
