    When the cursor type is `bar', putting the cursor over an image has
    no visual indication.

I agree we should consider that a bug.

    So perhaps when the cursor type is `bar', the image should have
    a border only on the left, by analogy with the cursor on characters:

Sorry, I don't understand.  "Should have a border only on the left"
implies that currently it has a border on both sides; but is that what
you really mean to say?  Currently is there any border?  ISTR that
there us currently no border, but I could be wrong.

If there is currently no border, adding one could break things.

Anyway, why is it crucial what border there is?  Can't we display
the bar cursor across part of the image itself?  That seems like
a simpler solution, less likely to break anything.
