Indeed, and to make the thing more readable, it is common practice to
arrange for the indentation to help the reader figure out where the
broken-line finishes and ends (otherwise, it really doesn't help the human
reader much).  Your shell example is a prime example, where you used
a single space of indentation.

Of course, sometimes the exact number of spaces/tabs shouldn't be touched by
Emacs, but I don't think there's a way for Emacs to figure it out, and the
(relative) lack of complaint over the current default indentation choice
seems to indicate that this default is a good choice.
