I think that the default is to set TERM to xterm... (at least it seems
to be so on my systems). One possible reason for this is that on
proprietary unixes there's no terminfo entry for rxvt (and the rxvt
terminfo entry is not correct on GNU/Linux anyway, nor it is correct
in the rxvt original package...).
