I do.  It would be impossible for xterm to figure out all varaiables  
invented by other terminal emulators, such as rxvt, and arrange for  
them not to be inherited.  Some of us sometimes runs xterms that  
where compiled long before rxvt (and thus COLORTERM) even existed.   
Only TERM is a common standard, and xterm handles that one correctly.
