    I don't think xterm knows about COLORTERM---it's just another
    environment variable as far as it is concerned.

I still think this is a bug in xterm.  Does anyone thing it is
correct for xterm to let that envvar be inherited?

I do. It would be impossible for xterm to figure out all varaiables invented by other terminal emulators, such as rxvt, and arrange for them not to be inherited. Some of us sometimes runs xterms that where compiled long before rxvt (and thus COLORTERM) even existed. Only TERM is a common standard, and xterm handles that one correctly.
