Initial splash screen is no longer displayed

I experience a strange bug with this pretest version:
Emacs no longer displays the initial splash screen and the scratch
message ("This buffer is for notes...") under X. I say "strange"
because I really don't understand what is going on here. My
observations are:

- The problem does not occur if Emacs is started with the "-q" option.

- The problem does not occur if Emacs is started on a text terminal or
  with the "-nw" option.

- The problem does not occur with Emacs 21.

Unfortunately, my .emacs is rather large and loads some other files I
wrote myself, so I cannot post it here. Do you have any tips how I can
debug this issue? I would not mind spending one or two hours on it,
but I really don't have any clue where to start.
