aspell does not work

Hello!

Launching GNU Emacs with -Q I want to spell-check a LaTeX file in 
German. aspell is not able to recognise words with umlauts as one word. 
aspell cannot display *Choices* in UTF-8: I only see words that try to 
remind of German words.

In GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0, X toolkit, Xaw3d 
scroll bars)
