Launching GNU Emacs with -Q I want to spell-check a LaTeX file in
German. aspell is not able to recognise words with umlauts as one word. aspell cannot display *Choices* in UTF-8: I only see words that try to
remind of German words.

What version of aspell is this? If it is 0.50, do a CVS update and
try this patch: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/42863

That patch is already in the Emacs CVS, so just "cvs up" will do.

I am using: @(#) International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell 0.60.2)
The GNU Emacs CVS code is about one week old.

I observed that it's helpful to invoke by hand/interactively ispell-change-dictionary so that aspell runs with this extra argument: --encoding=utf-8. It too seems to make it accept words with umlauts as one word. I just started to read once more aspell.info to make aspell launch from the start with the right arguments ...
