M-x longlines on RMAIL file destroys format

From: Ryan Yeske
Subject: M-x longlines on RMAIL file destroys format
Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 01:23:51 -0700

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!
Please write in English if possible, because the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the address@hidden mailing list.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

If you run M-x longlines while looking at a message in RMAIL and then
save the file all of the newlines will be stripped from the file.

***
DO NOT TEST THIS ON YOUR REAL RMAIL FILE!!! YOU WILL LOSE MAIL!!!
***

What I did was output a single message with long lines to XMAIL. Open
that file in rmail-mode, and turn on longlines mode with M-x
longlines. Add a label or something to mark the buffer as changed,
and save with 's'.

Rmail will continue to operate on this file until you close Emacs and
restart (or kill the buffer and revisit it, probably). Visit the file
literally and notice all the newlines have been stripped. Rmail gets
confused looking at this file in subsequent visits. There is no way I
know of to undo this. If you know, please let me know, I have several
effectively lost messages in an RMAIL file that is broken in this way.

Perhaps adding hard-newlines to RMAIL files would solve the problem,
and then only the soft ones added by longlines will be removed.

If emacs crashed, and you have the emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/usr/local/share/emacs/22.0.50/etc/DEBUG for instructions.
