That is not a bug.  ^@ takes up two columns, and so the recntangle
is two columns wide.

It's only *presented* as a "wide" character ...


Perhaps the presence of ^@ in a directory listing is a bug.


Yes, there must be some reason for that -- and it only happens in GNU Emacsen, not in xterm or Terminal.
