minibuffer-message msg doesn't show

I'm sorry I can't give a simple recipe to reproduce this. I'm really
not sure what's going on.

In Emacs 22, in some circumstances, the text that `minibuffer-message'
is supposed to display does not appear. When I step through the
execution with the debugger, however, the message does appear.

I'm not aware of any other subsequent message or input that would
cause the display to be aborted or inhibited, and, as I say, when I
step through it, the message appears.

Changing minibuffer-message-timeout has no effect on this problem
either.

Sorry I can't provide more clues, but perhaps someone who understands
the source code might be able to figure out what the problem is.

I do not have this problem in Emacs 20, in case that helps: the
message always appears.
