I used four methods of marking:

 dragging with the mouse downwards
 typing C-SPACE and then moving the cursor downwards
 typing C-SPACE and then moving the cursor upwards
 dragging with the mouse upwards

Every time the same. It continues with the just updated and compiled  
version (launched as src/emacs -Q). It happens too when I put empty  
lines at the block's beginning and end.

Putting the block from *shell* buffer into *scratch* buffer or  
inserting it into a TeX file sorting works fine ...
