Hi, I'm am reporting a graphical problem with emacs, the Xft-jhd branch.

The problem consists in incorrect character refresh. Described in very simplistic terms, when I type a character, the cursor advances but it leaves a trail after it.
If I type a backspace, the delete char remains on the screen, and if a type
another character the two appear superimposed one over the other.
The same problem happens also with the messages which appear in the buffers and
minibuffer.
All the messages appear one over the other.
I have to type C-l all the time to force a redraws.

I have been unable to isolate the cause of the problem.
The problem does not appear under Slackware 10 or Fedora Core 4 distributions,
but it appears in Red hat Linux Workstation:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 4)
Linux pc3643 2.4.21-27.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Dec 1 21:59:02 EST 2004 i686 i686 i386
GNU/Linux

I have recompiled freetype2 and the entire gtk+ without success.

Others have reported this also. I suspect there is a difference between different Xft,or possibly Xserver versions. Since I haven't seen it myself I have been unable to fix it.

Hope you would fix it.

The branch you are using is probably not going to be updated much more. There is (or will be?) another branch that merges the Xft changes with the unicode-2 Emacs branch. However, I don't see a tag for it in CVS.
