??? Did you check this in a buffer where Flyspell mode is turned on?
In such a buffer, "ESC TAB" is bound to flyspell-auto-correct-word,
which is almost what you want: it replaces the word at point with
successive corrections displayed in the echo area.

flyspell-correct-word pops up a menu, which is hard to do without a
windowing system.  Of course, it would be great if someone wrote the
code to use a buffer instead.
