    AFAIK, it just maps the names.  The fonts you have are those installed
    on your system; Emacs cannot add anything to them (unless you install
    BDF fonts from GNU intlfonts).

Then if I don't see the x-list-fonts also listed in S-mouse-1 does it mean
that they are there, but under different names?

    They are the same fonts, just named differently.  Again, AFAIK.

That seems to answer my question above. This might be a start for something
to add to the doc. I suspect others might also be confused about this.

    That's what I do, and it works for me, although I didn't try all the
    possible combinations.
