One additional thought regarding CHECK_NUMER: x_get_arg returning 0
for an invalid value if RES_TYPE_NUMBER is used, might just be an
implementation detail.  At least I don't see that behavior documented
anywhere.  That means CHECK_NUMBER could be useful once the
implementation of x_get_arg changes.  But as this seems unlikely, the
question of using it or not using it is probably not very important.
