Mode line garbled in latex mode

In latex mode, the mode line is garbled if there are
subscript/superscripts present above or in the displayed text.  It
happens when moving the cursor or scrolling (both up and down).  The
mode line becomes clean upon moving between different emacs windows,
but becomes garbled again as soon as I move in the buffer.  I attach
two snapshots of the emacs frame, one with the clean mode line
(auctex-clean.png) and one with garbled mode line (auctex-garbled.png).

Many thanks for the great tool that emacs is.  And many thanks for the xft. 
It is very useful for me, as I have a pretty bad vision.  My laptop
runs at 91 dpi,and without xft I have a hard time to find a font
that is not too thin for my eyes, or not too large, so I can dispay
a reasonable amount of information.  I am using now Luxi Mono at
9pt or 10pt, which with xft is just the right compromise between
legibility and bulkiness.
