Could you try setting image-cache-eviction-delay to nil,

does not help

and perhaps
also stepping with GDB through Fclear_image_cache, to see whether the
code there really gets executed?

trying to gdb emacs causes cygwin's X-windows to freeze up completely. a very consistent problem. presumably downgrading cygwin might help, but I tried downgrading by one version, which is easy to do via the cygwin setup, and this does not help. I don't know how to downgrade two versions and more which may be needed here.

can you suggest instead some line of code I could insert into Fclear_image_cache and where exactly, so that it will print out some message saying that this code is executed? If you can, please be very explicit, I have no c-programming experience whatsoever.

thanks...
