FWIW, I didn't understand the description, either.  Drew, please post
a precise reproducible recipe, and please include in the description
your mail setup, since you most probably don't use sendmail (which is
the default on GNU/Linux, and is most probably what Richard uses).

My setup on MS-Windows uses smtpmail.el to send email.
