hl-line-face breaks line into segments by face

M-x customize-option hl-line-face

Customize it to have the value `mode-line-highlight', which uses a
raised box.

Put the cursor on any line that has text in different faces. The line
appears to be segmented into several different boxes, one for each
stretch of text in a given face. That is, each piece of text of a
given face has its own box around it, instead of the entire line being
in a single box.
