Actually, with my setup, I don't see it. The selection does happen (I
debugged it) but redisplay does not occur (or does not show it). You might
remember this sort of thing sometimes happened when I tested earlier
autoselect delay implementations.

I'm not sure what you're asking for here - someone else to implement the
equivalent of popup_activated_flag on w32 and mac?
I can certainly help test on X. I did a quick hack to demonstrate that it
works in principle on X.
